Garage door security
Garage doors need to be secure for many reasons, but the two most significant ones are, to maintain the security of any house having a connecting door to the garage and, to ensure the safety of any person entering or leaving the garage.
A number of active security measures can be taken to fulfil both of these requirements and they include, an alarm, remote control, motorized operation, internal and external lighting and secure locking.
All of these points are summarized below.
Garage door automation
A motorised and hand-held remote controlled garage door enables its users to enter and leave the garage without the need to leave the vehicle. This enhances the safety of the driver and it is an important security feature during night time use and for ladies, families and older people.
Most standard garage doors can be converted into remote controlled automated doors with a simple motorized conversion kit.
Lighting
Lighting inside and outside the garage can be remotely activated to ensure that the garage and surrounding area are well illuminated during the dark hours. This provides peace of mind and added security.
Alternatively, external garage lights can be activated by night sensors and the internal light can be triggered by the opening of the garage door.
Locking
Most motorized garage doors are secure once closed, however additional locking systems can be added to enhance security.
None automated garage doors can be secured with a combination of locks and bolts that will depend upon the style of the door(s), i.e. a pair of side opening doors, a roller door etc.
Alarm
Any garage can be fitted with an alarm system. This may be part of a main house alarm system or independent to the garage. Either infra-red passive detectors, or circuit breakers fitted to the door and frame, can be used to detect unauthorised access.
