The advantages of a roller style garage door

A garage door operating with a roller mechanism has a number of relative advantages over the alternative systems. Here is a brief summary of these advantages when compared with a more conventional (and cheaper) Up and Over door.

1. A roller door's biggest advantage is the minimal amount of space that it requires when rolled up and giving access to the garage. This style of door wraps efficiently around a drum or cylinder which in turn is supported directly above the door's opening. This means that roof and side wall space is left free and that the door does not project forwards or backwards when open. This makes the roller style door the most efficient space operator of any garage door.



2. Roller garage doors are easy and effortless to use. The roller mechanism is smooth and manual opening does not require a great amount of effort.



3. This style of door has minimal impact on its components and the smooth flowing action of the door's operation means that these doors are reliable and long lasting.



4. The roller operation is ideal for conversion to (or purchase as) an electric remote control garage door. The winding motion of the opening and closing movements are perfect for motorization and they are almost unaffected by wind loads or gusts of wind on a breezy day.



5. Electric remote controlled roller doors are fitted with obstruction detectors that stop the door's motion if an obstacle appears to be in the path of the opening or closing movement. This makes this form of door very safe.



6. The manufacture of a roller door with a panel or sectional construction normally includes insulation. This makes these doors ideal in integral garages where retaining heat and conserving energy and fuel costs are important.



7. Because of the horizontal panelled construction and the high quality of manufacture, roller doors have some of the best garage door looks available. Their appearance can be made to simulate a traditional wooden garage door, or a highly ornate panelled one. They are available in a range of colors from wood simulations to standard and custom colors.

Roller doors can be fitted either -

• within a garage door opening (provided that the entrance has piers)
• Behind the garage opening.

Both placements see the door operate in a similar way, however fitting the tracks within the opening will be more space efficient.
