Garage storage

Modern garages are not just used for housing vehicles. In fact most garages double up as storage spaces for household items, gardening equipment, utility appliances and many even become workshops.

This means that maximising storage space within a garage is always at a premium and there are many specialist products that can turn a standard garage into the most versatile space within a house or out building.

Types of garage storage system

Most garages will benefit from some organised storage in the form of shelves, modular wall and floor cabinets, racks and hooks, or specialised storage for items like bikes or golf clubs.

Cabinets

Modern garage cabinets come in a massive range of styles sizes and colors and nearly all have modular compositions that enable different units to be connected in a near seamless and efficient way.

Many of these cabinets bear some similarities to kitchen units in that they incorporate the same mix of ground standing draw and cupboard units with bench like work surfaces. This turns a garage into a multi purpose workshop with plenty of storage and well designed work areas.

High level wall mounted units are also popular and, like a fitted kitchen, these cabinets can contain multiple draws of varying depths, solid faced or glass faced side, top or bottom mounted hinged doors and even self contained lighting and security. There are even special cabinets that include features like sinks and waste disposal units.

Cabinets of this type are built with heavy duty usage in mind and they are ergonomically designed and manufactured from hard wearing materials with tough, difficult to scratch and damage, surfaces.

The degree to which these garage cabinets and units can be customised is also extensive. Inserts ranging from coat rails to draw divider sets make it easy to organise tools and hardware, or to store overflow items from the house. However, the biggest advantage of these modular cabinets is their ability to store the maximum number and volume of items whilst limiting the amount of usable space that they steal from the garage floor area.

Workbenches, shelving and wall panels

Perhaps the single most important piece of garage furniture for most men is the workbench. Workbenches come in a variety of styles and sizes from the basic flat work surface with a shelf and open storage area below, to a fully fitted work surface that bridges and connects other modular items of garage furniture. Workbenches can be fixed or supported on moveable castors and they can be large or small.

Shelving and wall panels are the cheapest and simplest items of garage storage. Most work by connecting an easy to clean wall panel onto a wall, or by bridging the space between different shelving options.

These shelves may be basic projecting shelves, or they may have safety (anti-fall) bars to secure items like jars and bottles. Many are modular ensuring that they can be quickly altered to allow the storage of larger or smaller items with a minimum of disruption.

Wall panels can be aesthetic whilst helping keeping a garage clean and tidy, or they can incorporate hooks, spigots, handle holders, spring clips and loops to hold workshop tools or garden equipment.

Finishing touches to the most complete garage storage systems can include vital under unit lighting – essential for those working with tools. Storage bins and even pelmets, for edging high level wall mounted cabinets, can add further utility and smartness of appearance to the garage interior.
