Garage door fitting and DIY

A garage door is an important investment. Garage doors are expensive and they also have an impact on the security of a house and any person using them.

It is pointless buying an expensive good quality garage door only to have its functionality, lifespan and reliability ruined by poor fitting. For this reason it is important to give careful attention to the appointment of a contractor to perform the work.

Furthermore, the validity of warranties and guarantees may be affected, or even invalidated, by incorrect or substandard garage door assembly and fitting.

Who should fit a garage door

Before deciding who should fit a garage door it is advisable to read all manufacturer or supplier documentation concerned with guarantees and fitting.

Most manufacturers will require the door to be fitted by a reputable contractor and many automated garage door systems come with a supply-and-fit contract. This means that you can buy a turn-key project where a single company supplies, fits and guarantees the complete garage door system. For most people this is the best solution and it offers assured fitting and piece of mind.

If a separate contractor is appointed to fit the door it should be ensured that their involvement will not have an adverse affect on any warranty. The contractor should also be able to guarantee their own work and should be able to provide some a completion certificate, or a letter confirming their professional installation of the door. This may be a requirement of the guarantee.

DIY installation should only be attempted by an individual with trade skills. Automated garage doors require hard wiring to a mains electricity supply and garage door fitting is usually a two man job.
